What Is It And How Can Reiki Help?
Rei, in Japanese means Universal, Holy or Spiritual Consciousness. Ki means Life Force, Energy, Vital Force or that which energizes and animates all that is life. Together they mean Universal Life Force. Reiki is best known in the west as a gentle but powerful system of hands on healing. Reiki is a supremely loving, inclusive, universal energy, which cannot be owned or controlled, legislated by any group or individual, it is leaderless and belongs to everyone. Reiki is not a religious practice but a sacred one.
We are all spiritual Beings of Love and Light with a complex energy system. Our perceptions of life’s experiences can result in harboring dis-ease or dis-harmony within. When we are out of alignment with our Source, our body’s energy system is compromised. This may form a toxic lump so to speak, and stagnates the flow of our Life Force. This internal environment may in time make us prone to illness. Our perception of our biography can become our biology.
Reiki offers a non-invasive, non-intrusive, safe and powerful modality to bring balance back into our being, spiritually, mentally, emotionally and physically.
Reiki knows everything about us, knows where to go and how much is needed at any given time
Reiki brings a profound feeling of relaxation. There is often an immediate feeling of lightness, a sense of comfort, peace and tranquility, perhaps even relief of physical pain to varying degrees.
Reiki addresses the root cause of dis-ease and helps to get positive energy flowing again.
Reiki promotes and speeds up the healing of emotional, mental, spiritual and physical wounds
Reiki enhances the body’s own natural cleansing process. Like a stream - it might look clear but lots may be lurking unseen on the bottom. Reiki stirs up the mud, muddying the stream. As the mud clears, some may sink back to the bottom again. With a few or more sessions the stream clears and is renewed with vibrant life.
Reiki encourages the body’s innate ability to heal itself and facilitates our true nature and creativity to emerge once more with a renewed sense of wellbeing, peace and joy. We must go within or go without.
Reiki helps a person discover their true purpose in life. Helps with the achievement of goals and healing of past traumas, which may be hindering growth.
Reiki offers a way of discovering one’s true spiritual path and ultimately leads to contentment, enlightenment and the understanding that there is no separation from all that is – We are all ONE – from the Source - which is LOVE.
Reiki does not conflict with surgical procedures, medications, psychotherapies or any other therapies; it will enhance them. Reiki can do no harm and brings life changing results.

A Reiki Session
A Reiki session may take approximately an hour to an hour and a half. The recipient lies on a massage table, fully clothed and covered. With a light laying on of the hands the Universal Life-Force is transmitted through the practitioner to the client through the palms and fingers. The practitioner is a channel or instrument who observes and apart from the intent and desire has no influence in the healing process. What transpires is between the receiver, their higher self and the Divine.
Through the hands, the practitioner senses where the flow of energy is compromised. Just as much healing energy as is required flows to the recipient during each session. Heat, cold, tingling or pulsing may be felt to varying degrees. Similar to peeling an onion, the layers are peeled away and healing goes to a deeper and deeper level with each session.
While changes may be instantaneous, these may also be gradual. One may experience a spontaneous release of pent up emotions or perhaps feel very happy. Three sessions are recommended at first, thereafter as the need is felt or as an ongoing maintenance program.
The body will detoxify or cleanse as a result of the healing effects rebalancing the elements, emotionally, mentally, spiritually and physically. The body detoxifies through the skin, sinuses, tear ducts, bladder and bowel. This may happen to varying degrees or not even be noticeable at all. Each person’s perceptions, circumstances and experiences in their reality are unique to them and so is this cleansing process. Drinking sufficient water following a session, bathing or soaking feet with Epsom, Sea or Himalayan salt, helps speed up the process of elimination of toxins and minimize these effects during the next few days.
A feeling of being a bit ‘spacey’ can last a short while due to the adjustments which are taking place in the energy fields or chakras. This shows the process is working, it is only temporary, like the ‘muddying of the stream’ it will settle down as the balancing adjusts to a new level.
Dr. Mikao Usui, being an enlightened being, taught that there is no distance between any one of us, we are all one and thus saw the person for whom healing was requested as being ‘present’. Upon request and with the person’s permission, Reiki may be transmitted anywhere with the speed of thought and intention immediately setting the process in motion. It takes but a few seconds to a few minutes for a distant or absent healing session and is very effective.
Origins of Usui Reiki Ryo-Ho
Dr. Mikao Usui, born in 1865, excelled as a young student. He went on to be an experienced traveler with a broad range of interests. He was married and had two children. He worked in many fields, was a humble and modest man who struggled to make a living. He’d been a civil servant, a journalist, a company employee, political secretary, a missionary and a counselor working to rehabilitate prisoners. He had studied history, medicine, theology, psychology, asceticism, and physiognomy, to name but a few! He followed the Buddhist tradition and was a disciplined man in martial arts and had a keen interest in metaphysics.
In 1914, with the collapse of his business, he reached the conclusion that the ultimate goal in life was to attain the state of complete peace of mind or complete stillness and set out to achieve this state.
On the mountainside of Mount Kurama in March of 1922, he embarked on a 21 day fast and meditation. He had a Divine experience or “Satori” as it is called in Japanese. His Zen Master confirmed his enlightenment and through this his ability to heal. The Abbot encouraged him to use this ability to awaken enlightenment and healing in others. Mikao Usui called this Reiki.
On his return home he tried Reiki with his family and saw great results. He decided to share this blessing with others. He developed a method whereby he could pass this wonderful ability on to others so they too could practice this art of natural healing. This method would become known as “The Usui Reiki Ryo-Ho” or “The Usui Reiki Treatment Method for Improvement of Body and Mind”. Mikau Usui Sensei moved to central Tokyo in 1921 where he began teaching openly, conducting seminars, becoming very well known and respected. He traveled far and wide all over Japan practicing and teaching this method of natural healing to others.
In 1923 there was a devastating earthquake in Japan with many, many people killed and injured. Mikao Usui took his Spiritual healing method to the area and used Reiki’s healing powers on the survivors, curing and saving innumerable people. The Emperor of Japan gave him an honorary doctorate for his work with the victims.
Dr. Mikao Usui collapsed and died suddenly during a trip in 1926 at the age of 62. He taught Reiki to many people from all walks of life, some quite prominent people in Japan. He taught several in the Japanese Navy (Admirals, Captains and others) this practice of Reiki was very useful on long voyages. He had over 2000 students following his Spiritual method of living and healing at the time of his death. The Emperor of Japan honoured Dr. Mikao Usui for his lifetime of dedicated service. Some students came together after his death and erected a memorial in the graveyard of the Saihoji Temple in the Tohotama district to honour his benevolence and spread the Spiritual method to people in the future.
Hawayo Takata (1900-1980), lived in Hawaii, she was visiting Japan for health reasons in 1935. While being prepared for surgical procedures she heard a voice say to her, “There’s another way, there’s another way, there’s another way.” The surgeon who was familiar with Dr. Chujiro Hayashi’s work (a former student of Mikao Usui) referred Hawaya Takata to Dr. Hayashi’s clinic where she would be healed with Reiki. She stayed in Japan to learn this method of healing, working in the clinic and surrounding areas with Dr. Hayashi before returning to Hawaii to set up her own Reiki clinic. Dr. Hayashi was very intuitive, he sensed a war was brewing and thinking that women where more likely to survive than the men he had taught, he made his wife a Reiki Master and travelled to Hawaii and made Hawaya Takata a Reiki Master as well in 1938. He wanted to make sure Reiki would not be lost to the world ever again. Chujiro Hayashi chose to end his life in 1941 rather than be enlisted and be forced into killing others. Hawayo Takata attuned 22 Reiki Masters in the last 10 years of her life and is responsible for Reiki becoming the worldwide phenomenon it is today outside of Japan.
Could I learn to do this too?
Reiki is a very simple healing modality to learn. It is not taught in the traditional way we understand learning to be. It does not matter whether you are a scholar or illiterate, your gender, religion or race. Having the desire, intention and spiritual inclination is all that is required to experience the wonder of Reiki. It is a way of doing - without doing. Your innate ability to channel this Universal Life Force is awakened within you by a Reiki Master during an initiation ceremony or attunement to the Reiki energy. You have not been and can never be separate from this Source. We are all enlightened beings, beings of Light; we have just forgotten that we are.
You already have Reiki within you. We all have the ‘wiring’ so to speak, just like switching on a lamp; the attunements to the Reiki energy switches on the current. It is as simple as this! Without fail, this energy may be felt instantly or within a few days following the initiation. Reiki has the ability to transform lives. You will absolutely love having this pure love energy, always at your fingertips!
